Kira and Dax piloted the runabout; Odo sat behind the major and across from Bashir, who was studying his surroundings with an annoying degree of anticipation. Odo himself was not exactly calmafter all, he had a great deal on his mind, not the least of which was the prospect of discovering something about his originsbut he had too much dignity to let his anxiety show. Bashir, on the other hand, gazed out of the observation window and over Daxs shoulder at the controls with the frank curiosity and excitement of a child. At least the young doctor had the good sense not to try to engage Odo in conversation. They rode together in tense silence except for Dax, who, as always, maintained an air of competent serenity. It was she who first spoke, looking down at her viewscreen. The Cardassian warship is in visual range. On screen, Major Kira ordered. The stars on the overhead screen wavered, shifted to a view of the grim giant vessel. Kira checked her instruments, then gazed back up at the Cardassian ship, which was clearly headed for the wormhole, with an angry sigh. Theyre going right to it. She drummed her fingers on the console, thinking. Bashir put a hand on the back of Daxs chair and leaned forward eagerly, addressing Kira. Theyve got to listen to reason, havent they? When we warn them what would happen if they go in there Doctor, Odo interrupted, with blatant cynicism, most people in my experience wouldnt know reason if it walked up and shook their hand. You can count Gul Dukat among them. But Bashir persisted. Kira put up a hand for silence. The question is whether or not they decide to believe us, and theres not a lot we can do about that, either way. Its up to them. As Bashir settled back into his seat with an air of frustration, she pressed a control on the comm panel. This is the Federation ship Yangtzee Kiang, Major Kira Nerys in command. The panel beeped three times in succession. The image of Gul Dukat, in all his treacherous glory, appeared on the screen. Treacherous because Dukat looked so ordinary, so benign, yet was, Odo knew, so capable of the most vile cruelty. Yes, Major, Dukat said, looking infinitely put out and impatient at having to communicate with a Bajoran underling. Kira folded her arms as if trying to hold in her hatred. To her credit, she spoke in what was for her an almost civil toneno small feat, to Odos mind. He had witnessed the Cardassian atrocities firsthand, and Kira had hinted at the horrible violations suffered by her and her family. Odo was grateful, for once, that he had not had a family to lose to the Cardassians. Gul Dukat. Kira straightened, her expression regal, implacable, tolerating no dissension. We know youre headed for the wormhole. Wormhole? As she had expected, Dukats lips curved in a mocking little smile that made no pretense of sincerity. What wormhole? Kira began to bristle, but checked herself, held it in.
